Caution!

Executive decision, 2nd Feb 2011. I've decided to stop updating this list, because I just don't have the dedication to do it justice. It requires a lot of research and upkeep that I don't have the energy for, not to mention the debates that sometimes ensue in the forums. So as of today, please take this list with an even bigger grain of salt than before. Take the time to research your bookring participants carefully, and above all, communicate. Thank you. :)

Former introduction: This issue has come up a couple of times, and I feel that it's time to create this list. The following bookcrossers have a record of stalling bookrings/rays and/or accepting RABCKs without journaling. If you run or take part in a lot of rings/rays, it's wise to check before sending a book to someone listed here.

Please read this information first

The vast majority of bookcrossers are good people who keep to their word, and giving the benefit of the doubt often yields good results.

Reasons people end up on this list | Checking Up on Users | Turning People Down | Reformed Characters | Good Practice

Reasons people end up on this list
In rough order of likelihood:

  • Cannot read and send out books quickly due to illness/life getting in the way
  • Has asked not to be sent bookrings any more but is still on lots of lists
  • Signed up to more rings than can read/afford to send on
  • Book-hoarding

Checking up on users
If you want to be sure that a user has a good reputation before running a ring, start by doing a forum search with their username in the "contains" field and sort by date. This will bring up a list of all the posts (by all users) containing the username, the most recent at the top. If you see a lot of ISO (in search of) posts, be wary and read some of the topics for further details. Check bookshelf profiles for announcements about ill health, etc.

Turning people down
As a ring/ray organiser, you may sometimes need to turn potential participants away because you don't trust them. If there's a lot of evidence against them, you might consider asking me to add them to this list. It's important to explain to users why they have been turned away. Point them towards a forum post about their unreliability, or give them a link to this page.

Reformed characters
A fair few bookcrossers have started out badly and improved their behaviour later on. For this reason, it's important to check up even on the people listed here in case they've cleaned up their act. The forum searches below should make this easy for you. If your name is on this list and you wish to have it removed, please feel free to send me a PM with some links to rings/rays you've got moving again or similar.

Good Practice
If you want to avoid getting on this list, there are a few things you can do. Always remember that unless you are sending messages every step of the way, no one will know the status of the book - communication is key.

  • When sending a book on, always make controlled release notes. Always mention the username and location of the person you're sending the book to, and the estimated time of arrival. "Sending on today" isn't great, because the reader isn't certain that the mailing went to plan - try to confirm that you have posted it (past tense).
  • Always journal as soon as you receive the book. Consider journaling when you've started and finished reading it, too.
  • If any confusion arises, PM the organiser and ask their advice. This might be about the reliability of the next in line or something else about the book's destiny.
  • Be polite! Many users thank the organiser in their final journal entry.

If you'd like to bring a particular bookcrosser to my attention, please send me a PM with their username and links to significant forum posts.

From her bookshelf profile: I will be away from BookCrossing for quite some time until I can get my life fixed. So, please do NOT send me anymore bookring/bookray books as I most likely will not have anytime to read them. Thank you so much for your understanding.

It seems that books do eventually sometimes reach their destinations, but with much delay, miscommunication and uncertainty.

"Many books go 'missing in the post' once she sets them to traveling"
15th December 2009: Under Review, click to give a character reference or decide for yourself.
24th December 2009: I've read some references and private messages, and it seems that a lot of people have had trouble with this user in the past. [Former text removed for update]
5th January 2010: SpaceyStacey has PMed me to comment on the wording of the details. I'd like to say that most of the reports I've had, by PM or in the forums, state that she has more than once:
  • Held on to a book for a longer time than promised.
  • Hasn't made a journal entry for several months after receiving a RABCK.
  • Hasn't made release notes when sending a bookring on, so it's hard to tell where the book is or whether it's left her possesion.
However, a few people have also told me that they've had good experiences with her in RABCKs and other games. Some users have taken part in bookrings alongside her and found no problems at all. To summarise, she has a mixed reputation and could still be carefully considered on a book-by-book basis, eg: you might not want to send precious books to her, and you might prefer to put her on the end of lists if you want the ring to move quickly.
SpaceyStacey insists that the negative reports I've received are in the minority, so I encourage you to research for yourself and speak to her personally before making a decision. She tells me that she will mostly be taking part in RABCKs and games for the forseeable future.
15th January 2010: Please see this forum post for a summary list of many of SpaceyStacey's bookrings, and decide for yourself. PM me if you'd like to add to that list.
